{"id":595,"date":"2025-12-15T15:53:23","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T20:53:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/?p=595"},"modified":"2025-12-15T16:01:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T21:01:19","slug":"kali-baru-talitha-koumis-battlefield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/en-ca\/kali-baru-talitha-koumis-battlefield\/","title":{"rendered":"Kali Baru, Talitha Koumi&#8217;s battlefield"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-to-cyan-bluish-gray-gradient-background has-background has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">At 5:30 a.m., a day like so many others begins for 15-year-old Khalda Ghaniyyah and her three siblings in Kali Baru, a slum covering a maximum of 5.4 square kilometers, yet still one of Jakarta&#8217;s largest.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1980\" height=\"1320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/7a-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-592 size-full\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/7a-2.jpg 1980w, https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/7a-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/7a-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1980px) 100vw, 1980px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">With a population density of 50,000 inhabitants per square kilometer, Khalda is acutely aware of her neighbors&#8217; every move. Peace and privacy are impossible. By comparison, Quebec has a population density of 6.6 inhabitants per square kilometer.<br><br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Like most of the dwellings in Kali Baru, Khalda&#8217;s rented &#8220;house&#8221; (the height of irony) is constructed from salvaged materials, making the homes unsanitary and vulnerable to the heavy rains and countless floods that accompany Indonesia&#8217;s rainy season. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, since there are no sanitation facilities, the residents of Kali Baru have no choice but to relieve themselves directly in the river, which regularly overflows into the slum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Located along the Ciliwung River, bordering Jakarta&#8217;s main seaport, one of the city&#8217;s most polluted, Kali Baru is enveloped in a constant and indescribable stench, a stench that intensifies during the rainy season, which traps the air above the slum from November to April.<br><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"884\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-carte-Kali-Baru.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-590 size-full\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-carte-Kali-Baru.png 884w, https:\/\/www.talithakoumi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-carte-Kali-Baru-768x546.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 884px) 100vw, 884px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the multitude of tasks awaiting her before going to school, Khalda eagerly anticipates seeing her friends there. However, because her 65-year-old father is unemployed and her mother struggles to earn enough to provide for the family&#8217;s basic needs, Khalda often has to work in a small shop run by neighbors.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">When Khalda has time to dream of a better future, she dreams of becoming a chef.
